[ARCHIVED] WIC to Celebrate 40th Anniversary with Open House

Blue Earth County and the National Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) Association is celebrating an important anniversary of Strengthening Families for 40 Years. Blue Earth County WIC is honoring this 40th anniversary of improving the health of mothers and young children by hosting a special open house on Fri., Nov. 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The WIC office is located in the lowest level of the Government Center at 410 S. Fifth Street, Mankato. The public is invited to attend the open house that will feature the opportunity to meet local WIC staff, receive information about WIC nutrition services, tour the clinic, and ask questions. Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) staff will also be available to answer questions about improving health.

Since the first USDA WIC site opened in 1974, the program has improved the lives of millions of children by providing nutritious supplemental foods and instilling healthy behaviors that can last a lifetime.

Studies about WIC participation include the following outcomes:

• Lower infant mortality rates and improved pregnancy outcomes.

• Greater use of health care services of all types including dental care and immunization services.

• Updates to food packages to provide healthier options consistent with current science-based dietary guidelines
