[ARCHIVED] Highway 22 and Madison Avenue Roundabout Scheduled to Open Monday

Weather permitting, the new multilane roundabout at the intersection of Highway 22 and Madison Avenue will open to traffic at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 25, about one week ahead schedule.

With the Adams Street roundabout previously opened on July 25, motorists can expect to encounter two multi-lane roundabouts in the retail area of Mankato.

Important roundabout driving tips to remember include:
• Slow down – 20 mph or less when entering a roundabout
• Watch for signs and striping - to help you select the appropriate lane
• Yield – to all traffic in all lanes in the roundabout
• Proceed using the lane you have chosen – stop only for pedestrians and bicyclist’s
• Don’t stop in the roundabout – other vehicles will yield to you
• Don’t switch lanes or pass - once you are in the roundabout
• Don’t drive next to trucks – or large vehicles as they are turning

Anyone with concerns about driving the roundabouts is encouraged to view videos and review driving diagrams at www.roundaboutready.com. In addition, motorists can stop at the MnDOT headquarters at 2151 Bassett Drive where a replica of the Madison Avenue roundabout is located in the rotunda and staff is available to answer questions. A kiosk with driving information can also be found at the River Hills Mall.

The construction project, which largely consisted of replacing and repairing worn-out pavement, building roundabouts and improving accessibility to trails, was a partnership with MnDOT, Mankato and Blue Earth County. The project will result in increased safety and reduced delays for area motorists while enhancing the area transportation system.

Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye was awarded the $7.1 million contract. Most of the many subcontractors on the project are from the Mankato area.

Motorists are reminded not to drive road closure barricades and advised to drive with caution as some minor work remains on the Highway 22 project.
