Who Qualifies for Adult Foster Care

Qualifications for Adult Foster Care Residency:

  • Adults age 18 or older, who have a functional impairment and agree to placement in an adult foster care home.
  • Does not require hospitalization or care in another type of medical or psychiatric facility.
  • Is recommended for placement by a social worker or public health nurse through an assessment process.
  • Does not display suicidal or homicidal tendencies, or exhibit violent or aggressive behavior that cannot be managed in a foster care setting.
  • Has a source of payment for care.
Adults who benefit most from foster care are those who need help with everyday personal care due to developmental delay, mental illness, physical disability or aging. However, those who qualify for foster care do not need institutional care, such as provided by a nursing home or hospital. They are capable of living in the community with assistance and supervision.
