Responsibilities & Duties

The General Investigative Unit handles a wide variety of crimes here at the local level and also works in conjunction with other county, state, and federal agencies. Members of the unit routinely conduct complicated criminal investigations for the smaller police departments in the area.

General Investigations consists of 2 full-time general investigators that are responsible for working directly with the patrol deputies in following up and assisting in the investigations, as well as investigating their own cases assigned to them. Examples include homicides, major assaults, sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, burglaries, thefts, financial crimes and computer crimes.

Investigators are also responsible for processing crime scenes as well as evidence identification and preservation. Investigators work closely with other agencies within Blue Earth County to include Social Services, Community Corrections (Probation), MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and the County Attorney's Office.
