Wetland Systems and Subsystems

System


The term System refers to a complex of wetlands and deepwater habitats that share the influence of similar hydrologic, geomorphologic, chemical, or biological factors.

The primary systems found in the Minnesota are Palustrine, Lacustrine, and Riverine.

L: Lacustrine - lakes and deep ponds

P: Palustrine - shallow ponds, marshes, swamps and sloughs

R: Riverine - rivers, creeks and streams contained in natural or artificial channels periodically or continuously containing flowing water.
