Counterfeit Pills Cause of Three Overdose Victims

Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force Handcuffs

On 05/21/20 at approximately 0221 hours Officers from the Mankato Department of Public Safety and first responders were called to a drug overdose incident at an apartment on Monks Avenue in the City of Mankato.  First responders found three overdose victims.  Life saving measures were performed, however one of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene.  The other two victims were transported to MCHS.  One was admitted to the ICU and one was treated and released.  All three victims were male adults in their 20’s.

Deceased: Marcus Kory Krogh, 23, of Mankato.

The Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force was contacted to respond to the scene and assist with identifying the substance responsible for the overdose and the source of that substance.  Through witness interviews, task force agents were able to determine that counterfeit oxycodone pills appear to be responsible for contributing to the death of Krogh and the injuries to the other two males.  Counterfeit opioid pills are commonly found to contain dangerous amounts of fentanyl and have been responsible for numerous overdose deaths and injuries throughout the state and country.

Law enforcement, again, is pleading with the public to not ingest any “prescription” medication that was not dispensed by a pharmacy.  Counterfeit pills are purposely made to look like actual prescription medication, thus increasing their value.

The final cause of death is pending autopsy and toxicology results from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.  The condition of the male who was admitted to the ICU is currently unknown.

The investigation is on-going by the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force and the Mankato Department of Public Safety.
